Children's Book Illustration illustration

In a picture book, the illustrations are not decoration; they carry half the story. Children choose books by covers and remember them by characters, so the two decisions that matter most are made early: what the main character looks like, and what the world feels like. Our process locks both with concept samples before full production starts, so you never receive sixteen finished spreads in a style you did not choose.

Every project delivers layered source files and print-ready PDFs with correct bleed, trim, and color profiles for KDP and IngramSpark. That last mile is where self-published picture books usually stumble; ours arrive uploadable.

Full-color spreads

Typically 12 to 16 spreads for a standard 32-page picture book, composed around the text placement.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a children's book illustrator cost?

Freelance picture book illustration commonly runs $2,000 to $10,000 per book, or $50 to $500 per illustration depending on complexity and rights. Scriters full-book packages start at $799 with full commercial rights transferred to you.

Do I own the illustrations?

Yes, completely. Full commercial rights transfer on final payment, including merchandising and sequels. We also deliver the layered source files, which many cheap services withhold to force you back for edits.

Is the artwork AI-generated?

We disclose our production method per project in writing. Where AI tools are used in concepting, a professional illustrator directs, corrects, and finishes every spread, and consistency of characters across pages is contractually guaranteed. If you require a fully hand-drawn pipeline, we quote that explicitly.

My manuscript is already written. Can you just illustrate it?

Of course. We start from your text, produce a spread-by-spread visual plan, and flag any places where trimming text would let the pictures work harder. Writing services are there if you want them, never required.
